HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. I have a feeling 2009 is going to be a very productive year. It’s the year of the ox, we have to do well.

I thought it would be a good idea for all of you to get a better idea of who I am inside and out side of my 12’x9′ treatment room. So here it is, all of my internet links and a commentary about our economy.

My commentary on the state

of our current economic affairs:

I normally don’t do things like this, but I am finding it almost impossible to be quiet. I can’t sit on the side-lines anymore and watch good people go into agreement with the fear mongering media.

I am not a Nobel Laureate in economics. I am just a layman with a point of view I would like to share. First, I will NEVER gone into agreement with the news media on the state of our economy, or anything else for that matter. Yes, the economy sucks, I am not blind and I defiantly don’t need a newspaper to point out the obvious or the truth. With that said, our economy IS bad, but it’s FAR worse because of the way it’s downward slide has been nurtured by the media. If the population of the USA had all of their TV’s and newspapers removed from September 15th on, no one would know we were supposed to be in a recession (a little liberty taken here). All I am saying, is that things would not be as bad as they are if the population of the US, and now the world, hadn’t gone into complete apathy and agreement with the news media (I mean the merchants of chaos).

Here is what precipitated my commentary. I have had 4 patients, over the last 30 days, tell me that they have to stop coming in. These are sick people, who will remain sick if they stop coming in. When I asked:

“Did you or your wife lose your job?” NO!

“Did you have some kind of emergency where you lost or had to spend all of your savings?” NO!

“Are you making less money than you did a month ago?” NO!

“Than why can’t you come in?” Well, it’s the economy. It’s so bad now and….

“So nothing has changed in your environment, other than you have gone into agreement that the economy sucks and that you should contract, because that’s what the media says you should do, right?” Yes!

“Logical, NO!” “Reactive, YES!”

Don’t Go Into Agreement With It, Out Produce It.

PLEASE don’t go into agreement with the idea that “contraction” is the answer, it isn’t. PLEASE don’t go into agreement with the “doom and gloom” forecast the media is spewing out, on a minute-by-minute basis. An over-simplistic explanation for what is going on is the concept of “yin and yang.” Nothing will ever expand or contract indefinitely. An active effort to achieve a balance is a continuous phenomenon and IS always present. In the body, this continuous phenomenon is called homeostasis.

In the economics scene of the world, since the beginning of time, expansion was the answer to contraction (conquer a new land) and contraction occurred to reign in uncontrollable, non-sustainable expansion (decline of the Roman and British Empire). Presently, we are readjusting from an era of unsustainable, out of control growth. There was no-way possible we were ever going to keep-up with that type of growth. The sad part is that we’re all crying now because we went into agreement with the expansion (media here again) and over-extended our selves, with no safety-net. The other sad part is that we usually don’t like to take responsibility for our actions, we like to find a “fall-guy” (Bush, Wall Street, mortgage companies…?). We actually created these monsters, we allowed them to do what we wanted them to do, and that is: enable us to spend what we didn’t have and/or make 20+% return on our investments (Ponzi schemes). It’s a nice concept, but not too realistic in the long-run, and far more reactive than analytical.

The GOOD NEWS is that our nation and economy are both realigning, and we will be stronger and better for it. Now, not tomorrow, is the time for all of us to produce, outflow, help each other where we can, and NOT CONTRACT. I’ll bet a million bucks that the majority of you have or are presently realigning their spending and finances, that’s perfect. With everyone putting in the financial ethics, it will be a long time before we see times like these again. I hope.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please remember this is just my personal opinion and that’s it.

Marcus S. Ettinger DC, BSc

Medical Detective and Orange County Chiropractor

During the last 50 years, our planet’s population has been witness to global terrorism, global warming, world-wide glacial melting, over-population, dwindling natural resources, pharmaceutical drugs being consumed like candy, ADD/ADHD, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, Prozac, an epidemic called welfare, morbid obesity, world hunger, blah, blah, blah, and the list goes on.  Why have all of these things occurred?  The cause is a global pandemic known as, “lack of personal responsibility.”  It is an insidious little parasite, immune to all medications, responding only to pro-survival actions.

The dictionary has many definitions for the word “responsible.”  The first one fits what I feel I do as a doctor: “legally or ethically accountable for the welfare of another.”  When I graduated from college, I swore an oath to be responsible for anyone who sought my care, and I feel I have never violated that oath.

There are two other definitions that fit how I act in my personal life and how others, if responsible, should act.  1) “Involving personal accountability or ability to act without guidance or superior authority.”  2) “Capable of making moral or rational decisions on one’s own, therefore answerable for one’s behavior.”

The reason I am bringing this issue up now, is because the word responsible has been losing its meaning, little by little, year after year, most notably in the last 25 or so years.  I have been personally witnessing and feeling the effects of this, in my practice and in my surroundings, for some time now.

In this essay, I am only going to focus on the topic of “health and responsibility.”  As for personal responsibility and the other aspects of one’s life, just be honest with yourself.  If you haven’t been applying the definitions of responsibility then go for it.  The people and the world around you will see the change and acknowledge you for it.

It is my personal opinion that the vast majority of people who are experiencing health related problems are ignoring them; doing nothing or ignoring it (no responsibility); or are placing the total burden of responsibility on a doctor(s) for getting their health back (with drugs and/or surgeries) or maintaining it at a certain, sub-optimal, level (with drugs and/or surgeries). The fact is: Healthy people, I find, just take better care of themselves.

Examples: If you have high “this” or low “that”, take a pill.  If it’s clogged, send in Roto-Rooter.  If it’s too fast or too slow, take another pill.  If you think there may be a problem now or in the future but aren’t sure yet, take a pill just to be on the safe side.  If there’s a new symptom that pops-up from taking drug A, don’t stop drug A, because drug B will handle that pesky little side-effect.  It’s nothing! It’s just a side-effect to prescription DRUG.

This complacent attitude our society has developed is extremely dangerous, and has accounted for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of needless deaths and hospitalizations, and TWO TRILLION dollars a year ($2,000,000,000,000 – 16% of the USA’s GDP and more than the income produced by France) spent on medications and our American health-care system. Fact: “Medications ONLY treat symptoms, while masking the underlying condition or disease state.  Medications do not rebuild or regenerate tissue structure or function.” You can quote me on that the next time your MD writes you a prescription.

Geneticists (doctors who study and research our genetic makeup, DNA, etc…) state that we reach our genetic potential between 30-35 years of age.  This means that we are at our peak, our prime at that age.  After that, our bodies start to deteriorate.  Some of us go through this process very slowly, others quite rapidly.  The rate of this deterioration depends slightly on genetics, but the lions share rests on the level of personal responsibility you devote to maintaining your health!

It’s not the sole responsibility of doctors, family, friends, Richard Simons, or Jenny Craig.  IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Taking responsibility for your health has four main components:

First, there is EDUCATION.  Educate yourself on diet, anatomy, exercise, what it means to be healthy, or anything else that may benefit you in living a longer and healthier life. You can also hire a coach, like me or another wellness professional, who can guide you in which directions you would like to go, in becoming more personally responsible for your health and well-being.

Second is NUTRITION. The most important point here is to eat to support every cell in your body, not just for the taste or because it’s a good deal.  With that said, I am not a sadist.  Yes, please, eat for the sheer love of food, one or two meals a week.  If you don’t, that’s totally irresponsible in my book.  Life is way too short to neglect the finer things in life, and at the same time, too darn short to reduce your life-span by eating like crap.

Third is EXERCISE.  If you don’t move it or use it, you WILL lose it!  Nothing can be truer.  The surest way to get osteoporosis, arthritis, sore joints, weak muscles and tendons, a slow metabolism, dementia, or Alzheimer’s is don’t exercise – that includes your brain as well your special purpose parts.

Fourth is A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT.  If you spend a prolonged period of time in an environment (work, home, a friends, in-laws….) that you don’t want to be in, because the people are chronically negative, rude, mean, antagonistic, unethical… toward you or others – get out!  If unethical or criminal behavior is occurring in any form – get out!  The stress chemicals that will be created inside of you from being in this type of environment will literally accelerate the aging process and weaken your immune system faster than any other factor.

All of the above four components when not actively followed have been proven to weaken the immune system and body, by placing undo negative stress on it.

These four components for taking responsibility of your health may seem obvious to some, and to others they may seem as foreign as learning Russian.  For those of you who are taking personal responsibly for your health, I validate your effort.  For those of you who believe your body will run forever without any needed adjustment to its present condition or believe that all those aches and pains, stiffness, inability to eat the foods you did when you were younger, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and increased weight are just signs of getting older, and that it’s “inevitable”, you’re wrong or just misinformed.

I hate to say this but it’s the truth, “poor health = “irresponsibility and good health = responsibility.”  You, yourself, have personally created your present state of health, knowingly or unknowingly, by lack of following the above four components to health. The good news is that it’s never too late to change your present condition.  Recognizing that a problem exists, and also recognizing that a positive change needs to occur is all that is required.

If you, a loved one or friend needs help or just wants an expert opinion, I am just a phone call away.  I have helped clients with conditions ranging from Acne to Zoster (Shingles), with an emphasis, lately, on diet, exercise and weight-loss.

To Dr. Ettinger,

Almost two years ago I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus. My energy level was extremely low and I had lost interest in doing the things I had previously enjoyed, as well as everyday necessary work.

I discontinued my volunteer work at my church and my country western dancing. I had to literally drag myself to the gym to curb my increasing weight.

Today I am back dancing. In fact, I am taking another type of dance class weekly. I am scheduled to resume my volunteer work and have plans to start a new outdoor hobby. My workouts at the gym have returned to being fun, re-energizing and feeling positive and healthy.

My outlook on life, myself and my future have changed so dramatically I can’t believe it’s me. It’s like I found the old me again and I am certain I can attribute all this to you and your guidance.

I brought my 10 year old son Neil in to see Dr. Ettinger due to a severely dry skin condition, which at the time covered his entire body.

He has had the condition from birth, and consequently I had tried numerous types of treatment over the years. Neither my family physician, nor an allergist, or even an herbalist were able completely cure the condition.

I also began to research the problem myself and tried other types of holistic therapies.  When creams, lotions, prescription medication, and aroma therapy did not work, I resigned myself to the fact he would simple have to live with the condition, and we would do what we could to help keep it under control. That is until I found him crying in his room one day, because the other children at school were teasing him over his skin.

As a last resort, I brought him into this office (Dr. Ettinger) to see if anything could be done.  After being tested nutritionally, he was put on a dietary and supplement plan which did begin to improve his skin.

Within about a 2 ½ month period, Neil’s skin was completely clear.  Neil and I (his mother) are both surprised and very grateful for the very successful outcome.

Because it is, because it is, because it is, because it is….

My dog ate my homework, I woke up late, I forgot, a democrat is in the white house, there was no soap, the bank was closed, I didn’t want to, I am on my period, I have a kidney infection, I forgot how.

Because it is, because it is, because it is, because it is….

It’s too hot, It’s too far, It’s too much money, it’s too much trouble, it’s too big, it’s too loud, it’s too cold, it’s too hard, it’s the wrong color, it’s not my size.

Because it is, because it is, because it is, because it is….

I didn’t hear you, I wasn’t listening, I didn’t know, I can’t read, I can’t read directions, I am a man, I had a rough day, I am tired, and just plain because.
