Jennifer Warner in her article for WebMD Health news states that getting a good nights sleep, seven or more hours, may actually prevent the common cold. In the study she consulted, researchers determined that people who sleep less than seven hours per night are three times more likely than those who sleep at least eight hours to catch a common cold after being exposed to a cold-causing virus.

I completely concur and recommend at least seven to eight ours a sleep every night to my patients. One component that was not discussed in the study, which I find even more important, is when you go to bed. An hours sleep before midnight is equivalent to two hours of sleep after midnight. The body’s natural repair mechanisms are more efficient, active and productive during the hours of 10:00pm to midnight, and to a lessor degree after that. So get your eight hours of sleep, starting at around 10:00pm for optimal repair and wellness. Sweet dreams.
